Why you should take ergonomics seriously:
- Lifting patients every day is not only physically exhausting, but it also carries dangerous risks. If you push yourself too much or make a wrong move, it could lead to serious and long-lasting pain. This can immediately affect nurses and heighten the risk of needing medical treatment to stop the continuous discomfort.
- Staff shortage is a huge problem within nursing and the facts don't lie: 47% of nurses suffer from backpain, and if you drop out with a musculoskeletal injury, you'll need to stay home for at least 20 days. This situation can create a vicious cycle where incoming staff also become overwhelmed and drop out, placing even more pressure on those who remain. Doing nothing about this will keep making the shortage progressively worse.
- Solving ergonomic issues will make nurses work more efficiently and improve the quality of their work. On top of that they will also be happier with their jobs when they feel cared for and are not constantly struggling with back pain problems. If you want to improve nurses' well-being, is taking care of their ergonomic needs not the first step?
